thanks for your bugreport. I mostly did not change things except for a rebuild so I wonder what is going on. Could you please try to move the /root/.synaptic folder (temporary) away and start with a fresh profile to see if that also shows the problem?

I renamed my /root/.synaptic folder as synaptic_0, and launched a new
instance of Synaptic. A fresh /root/.synaptic folder & files were created.
The 'Supported' column icons look the same - very large. I have attached a
screenshot of both my original finding, and this recent attempt using a
fresh /root/.synaptic folder.

Now that I look more closely, the 'Status' column icons are also very large
- maybe a clue?
