Bazel Team,

The 4.x series of Bazel is rather old at this point and there have been
significant improvements in the 5.x series. Some of those improvements will
have a direct and positive impact on ease of packaging, ease of use, and
ease of maintainability of the Bazel infrastructure in Debian. We should
upgrade.

Sorry for not noticing this sooner but this bug is for tracking our
progress to the goal of packaging Bazel 5.x.

I would love to package 6.x and my goal is to include it (if not 7.x) in
the trixie release. If you want to get notifications for that goal,
please open a new wishlist bug against bazel-bootstrap so that you can
get those notifications.

Furthermore, I encourage you to join our team on Salsa [1] and subscribe
to our excessively low-volume mailing list [2]. We welcome any help that
you'd be willing to volunteer towards achieving these goals.
