Request to allow xfce4-screensaver at least as an alternative to light-locker.
In the meantime, XFCE has removed configuration support for light-locker. This means that an installation of trixie with XFCE-Desktop installs light-locker, but this package is no longer configurable via the graphical UI of XFCE. The desktop is locked after 5 minutes of inactivity without the possibility to change this behavior in the XFCE configuration UI. This is very annoying. Instead, the xfce4-screensaver package is now supported in the XFCE configuration UI. The package task-xfce-desktop should therefore no longer recommend light-locker, but xfce4-screensaver instead so that xfce4-screensaver is installed together with the XFCE desktop. If possible, this change should be made before the release of trixie.
Users installing Trixie XFCE are running into exactly the issue Ulrich Gaiser describes. https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=827120&hilit=light+locker#p827120 In addition, there is an 11 year old bug in light-locker: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=773743 Users are running into this bug after installing Trixie XFCE https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=828455#p828455 xfce4-screensaver does not have this bug: another good reason to remove the light-locker recommend.
We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of

Hello, I did an install of xfce with the daily netinst image to test this change to tasksel. I ended up with both light-locker and xfce4-screensaver installed. I think this may be because the control file for xfce4-session lists light-locker first in the screensavers it recommends but I am not sure.
Hi, Am 22. September 2025 02:24:36 MESZ schrieb Brandon Werner <brandon_code@fastmail.fm>: tasksel does no longer pull light-locker in by its package dependencies for xfce, so there must be some other Depend/Recommend, most likely from an xfce metapackage. Holger
Does Power Manager function as intended in 4.20?
xfce4-session recommends light-locker, but also xfce4-screensaver:
rec: light-locker
simple screen locker for lightDM display manager
or xfce4-screensaver
screen saver and locker that is integrated with the xfce4 desktop
or xscreensaver
Screensaver daemon and frontend for X11
or mate-screensaver
MATE screen saver and locker
Would it cause light-locker to be installed if task-xfce-desktop is no
longer pulling light-locker?
Hi, Donald Broatch <donaldbroatch@googlemail.com> wrote (Mon, 22 Sep 2025 10:22:14 +0100): I already identified xfce4-session being the reason possibly, and just tested this on freshly installed sid with a console-only installation (without any desktop): installing xfce4-session there pulls in light-locker. So this issue needs to be fixed in xfce4-session now. Reassigning. Holger
Thanks. Would it be possible to bump up the severity level because this bug means that Power Manager is basically broken in a fresh install of Debian Trixie XFCE. XFCE 4.20 dropped light-locker, so power manager has no control over screen blanking, and suspend fails after screen lock with default settings due to a long standing bug in light-locker. Multiple topics asking for help with these issues at the Debian forum.
