The applet functions correctly, but when I switch from my default
'us,dvorak' layout to my alternate 'il' one, a question mark is
displayed instead of the appropriate flag.

My /etc/defaults/keyboard contains:

XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="us,il"
XKBVARIANT="dvorak,"
XKBOPTIONS="terminal:ctrl_alt_bksp,grp:alt_shift_toggle,ctrl:swapcaps"
