libxml++2.6 is documented on its upstream website
<https://libxmlplusplus.github.io/libxmlplusplus/> as:

The suggested replacement is one of the newer, parallel-installable
versions libxml++-3.0, libxml++-4.0 or libxml++-5.0.

If someone wants to package one of those (as requested in #819562)
then they should be a separate source package, similar to the relationship
between GTK 2, 3 and 4. As a result I'm marking this bug as wontfix:
it will never be fixed *in the libxml++2.6 package*.

Hello,
I'm the uploader and also upstream of Galois.

I wasn't aware that libxml++2.6 is obsolete. Thanks for letting me know.

Of course I'm interested in upgrading to a newer version. Reading from
<https://libxmlplusplus.github.io/libxmlplusplus/> it looks like I
want version 4.0 (Galois is based on gtkmm so I have no reason to move
away from Glib::ustring, and I'd like to keep UTF-8 support). But I
don't know either what is the difference (and incompatibility?)
between Glib::ustring in glibmm-2.4 and 2.68.

Anyway, if nobody else is going to package the newer versions, I might
give it a try. But my experience with Debian packaging is limited to
Galois, which is a very simple package, so I can't guarantee that I'll
be able to succeed.

Meanwhile, there's no plan to remove libxml++2.6 from Debian unless it
gets some unfixed RC bug, is there?

libxml++-4.0 is already packaged in Debian's NEW queue:
https://ftp-master.debian.org/new/libxml++-4.0_4.4.0+ds-1.html

libxml++-5.0 also.

Thank you,

Thanks!

But, I've done a little more reading, and I seem to understand that
libxml++4.0 requires GTK+ 4 (glibmm 2.68 comes with that). Porting
from GTK+ 3 to 4 isn't trivial (I suppose I'll have to do it
eventually, but I'd rather not do it now). Could you please package
libxml++3.0 too? It should be a drop-in replacement for 2.6 and would
make all those warnings about auto-ptr go away (and 2.6 could be set
for removal once 3.0 is in).

Gerardo

It looks like libxml++-4.0 and libxml++-5.0 are now in testing:
