I have 2 external monitors with my Dell Precision 5570 laptop, connected
via the Thunderbolt WD22TB4 dock. With the linux-image-6.8.9-amd64 kernel,
then with linux-image-6.8.11-amd64, one of these monitors (not always the
same one) randomly gets blank, several times a day. When I downgraded to
the 6.7.12 kernel before the upgrade to 6.8.11, the problem disappeared.
So this is really an issue with the 6.8 kernels.

The issue seems to be the same as
https://github.com/pop-os/pop/issues/3261
(specific to a 6.8 kernel, randomly blank for a few seconds).

With almost the same hardware, but apparently a more serious problem:
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/ecc8bd98-0dac-4f17-abb3-ebc8b10fd0f7@leemhuis.info/T/
which mentions

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/i915/kernel/-/issues/10637

but this is actually unrelated (there was a firmware bug, but
I already have the fixed version "Fixed the issue where a black
screen is displayed intermittently when the external monitor is
connected to the Dell Dock WD19, WD19TB, and WD22TB4.- Improved
the display compatibility of WD19, WD22, and HD22 series dock
between systems and monitors."). I new firmware has been available
for several days, but I haven't upgraded yet.

I can also see various issues reported about 6.8 and dual monitor
setup.

removing "linux-image-6.8.11-amd64" since this is not specific to
this version.

This bug is still present in linux-image-6.9.7-amd64 6.9.7-1: one
of my 2 external monitors (not always the same one) gets blank for
a short period. There's nothing related in the journalctl output.

I recall that reverting to linux-image-6.7.12-amd64 6.7.12-1 makes
the problem disappear.

With the linux-image-6.9.8-amd64 6.9.8-1 kernel, the problem occurred
on 2024-07-09, a first time with only one blanked monitor and a second
time with both monitors blanked.

I was off from 2024-07-10 to 2024-07-19 (today) in the morning.

With the linux-image-6.9.9-amd64 6.9.9-1 kernel, the problem has just
occurred (2024-07-19), a few hours after its installation.

With a desktop machine (Dell Precision Tower 7810) that has just one
monitor, I've noticed a couple of times that the monitor blanked for
a fraction of second. I've never noticed that in the past. I don't
know whether this is related...

Hi Vincent,
second

Could you please report this upstream following
<https://drm.pages.freedesktop.org/intel-docs/how-to-file-i915-bugs.html>?
(We don't have any patches to the i915 driver or DRM core, so I don't
think it matters that you are running a distribution kernel.)

Ben.
