Ausweisapp is mostly for German speaking users. It contains a man page, but this man page is provided in English only. However, translated man pages are provided in manpages-l10n. Especially the German translation would be helpful for this package, hence I propose to "suggest" it. (Currently, there is also a Romanian and Danish translation available, but I doubt there are very relevan for Ausweisapp users)
Hi Helge, That's not quite accurate. Even foreigners can use it when they get an eID [1] which they can apply for when they have a residence permit. You can be a user of this app without speaking German. The manpage was contributed by a Debian Developer which probably explains this. Since I assume you have provided that manpage, have you considered sending it upstream? They are usually very happy to take patches. Again, it's a common misconception that AusweisApp is exclusive to Germans with a personal ID. Foreigners can use it with an eID which is why the app itself is also translated into different languages. Adrian
Hello John,
Yes, but I'm rather confiden that this is a minority.
Yes, this was not meant as an offence, on the contrary, I quite
appreciate the existance of the man page.
Well, do you really think it is a good idea? Especially since …
In this case, upstream would need to maintain the translation
infrastructure (po4a) but also attract and maintain the translators.
And I've strong reasons to believe this won't be the focus of their work.
Thus, especially for such a leaf package like AusweisApp2 it is
sensible to maintain it in the manpage-l10n pool and suggest the
manpages-de package so the translation becomes available.
In the end, this is a wishlist bug for a "Suggest: manpages-de".
Greetings
Helge
Hi Helge, Basically every foreigner living in Germany is eligible for using an eID, so about 15 million people. I wouldn't call them a minority. The idea of the eID is to enable citizens in Germany deal with authorities online instead of having to go to a local government office. Hence, the eID and AusweisApp is useful to everyone living in Germany, not just Germans. Let's see what Andre Klitzing (CC'ed) says. He is one of the upstream developers. Well, the app itself is officially provided in several languages, so I'm not seeing why they also shouldn't maintain manpages in these languages if the community provided the,. Technically, it's a leaf package but that doesn't mean it's not important. It's the official package you need for electronic government services in Germany. So, it's not really irrelevant. Sure, but I always prefer sending improvements upstream so that all distributions can profit from them rather then confining them to Debian. Adrian
Hi there, the AusweisApp has A LOT of Non-German users. :-) Feel free to submit a pull request for the German man page. There should be no reason not to support multiple languages. You’re right that we don’t officially maintain translations of man pages or provide a translation service for additional languages. However, that shouldn’t prevent us from accepting a German man page as well. Please note that AI-generated translations may raise copyright concerns, as you may not hold the copyright to them. So THAT cannot be accepted. Best regards André Klitzing
Hello John,
I'm no intending to argue about this.
Fine with me.
But since you are (rightfully) concerned about further translations, I
simply question if this would be the right place, although in the
general case I completely agree.
I wasn't aware that AusweisApp2 was localized beyond English and
German, so if there are active teams handling more languages and which
are willing to maintain the man page translations as well, then I'll
gladly transfer the translations there and arrange with you the
appropriate package relations; I've done this numerous times in the
past already.
My argument is not about relevance, it is about the size of the
project. If you are KDE, gnome, libreoffice or GNU, you usually have a
large translation community around you. That was what I wanted to
adress.
It is upstream (manpages-l10n) already, so all distributions using
translated man page from us already benefit from this translation.
Hence this discussion only centeres if it should be hosted at
AusweisApp2 (upstream) or manpages-l10n (upstream). I never asked you
to ship the translations only at Debian level.

Hello André,
Great to hear.
I can look at this in the weekend. This would need the po4a
infrastructure to be integrated in your build system as well, so that
man page translations remain maintainable and current.
Also it would be great if you could provide me with the contact
details of your current translation teams (or I can pull them from
the po file headers), so that they become aware of this new task and
how to handle the translations. I wouuld also inform the active
translators from manpages-l10n, as they might have this man page
currently under translation.
(I will look at this at the weekend, I currently lack the time to look
at this in more detail, I just reply to e-mails).
All current translations (German, Danish, Romanian, Arabic) have a
translator name and copyright attached. How these persons created the
translations, I do not know (except for German, where I did the
translation old school by hand).
Greetings
Helge
