Dear Maintainer,

The current version in stable is almost 2 years old and will be 3 years old by the time Debian 13 will come out.
There are two newer major versions upstream. And with time, mods have a harder and harder time to test on and limit API feature usage to the N-2 version. In the past there have been at least two proheminent mods (MineClone2 and Mineclonia) that started requiring a higher version than the Debian stable (11) had at the time.
There is a big chance 5.6 will be the N-3 version by the time Debian 13 will come out.
There are a few multiplayer servers that are confirmed to be using Debian and thus would benefit from having a simpler, clean and reliable way to deploy the latest release. VS adding the testing repository and getting minetest from there, as I've seem one server reluctantly do in the past.
There are network improvements in the latest versions that might help with observed online problems of never recovering from punctual packet loss from the client.

Here was all the info I had to back the need of having a backport of Minetest 5.8 for stable.

Thanks for the recent update in testing and the packaging work in general. Minetest is one of the most mature and elaborated libre games and it's a huge help to have it in Debian.

Regards,
