he's right.  it is confusing, and is a good example of why debian has a bad
reputation for being a "hard" distro.

i'm sure there are reasons why not to do this.  but in the name of improving
debian's usability, i'm asking anyway.

please consider giving dpkg a --reconfigure switch to invoke reconfiguring an
already installed package.
