Dear Maintainer,

the script hylafax_wrapper is used in cron.weekly/hylafax to wrap calls to (among others) faxcron. When triggered, it will globally do a bind mount / unmount on /var/spool/hylafax/etc, thus breaking the local bind mounts in hfaxd.service / faxq.service using systemd's

BindPaths=/etc/hylafax:/var/spool/hylafax/etc

option.

Outcome: After the weekly cron run, /var/spool/hylafax/etc appears empty for faxq and hfaxd started using systemd.

Hello Markus,
could you please check the contents of file "mounts" and "mountinfo" in
/proc/<hfaxd pid> before and after the cron weekly run?
Thank you,
Giuseppe

Could you please clarify some details: you wrote about an installation, so I
supposed this was not an upgrade, then you wrote that old data vanished.
Was this a complete upgrade from debian 11 to 12?

Thanks,
Giuseppe

Debian 12 installation was performed completely fresh, a new system, not
and update/upgrade from an older Debian version.

But after OS install, I manually backed up / restore my old HylaFAX
server configuration, which was plenty of data (faxes, logs...).

Now, after the CRON JOB was run, all files seem to be gone despite I
set the two variables to tell not to do so; and what is even worse,
HylaFAX is NOT working :-/

I have to spend the full day to restore it again, being a production
server.

Thanks for your answers, Camaleón. I still have some:

OK

Was the backup/restore of data done after hylafax packages were already
installed and configured? Or, was hylafax installed after che restore of the
data?

So, you restored the data, you started hylafax, everything was working right,
maybe you sent or received some faxes, then the cron job was run and deleted
everything despite you changed FAXCRON_OPTS and FAXQCLEAN_OPTS in
/etc/default/hylafax?

What were the values you gave to these variables?

Thank you,
Giuseppe

Well... kinda so, but yes (see #BTS 1031200).

HylaFAX was FINE yesterday until TODAY when the cronjob run and hit
this new bug.

Not there ;-)

Well, AFTER the cronjob routine was executed, I'm experiencing two (2)
issues:

1. None of my fax users (normal user -sm02- and admin user) are able to
operate as usual. Log NOW says:

2. My old faxes and logs are also gone because of the faxqclean routine
was run despite is was disabled. Removing these old files prevent
HylaFAX server to operate normally, because of «seqf» files DOT NOT
MATCH (these files hold a count number).

root@stt005:/# cat /var/spool/hylafax/log/xferfaxlog
09/01/24 11:31	CALL	000009609	ttyS0		""	fax	"+34 xx xxx xxxx"	""	0	0	0:00:49	0:00:49	"No sender protocol (T.30 T1 timeout)"	""	""	""	""	""

As I pointed out in my first comment on this bug, I set the
variables in «/etc/hylafax/hfaxd.conf.systemd» and gave them a «null»
(empty) value as instructed in README file:

root@stt005:/var/spool# cat /etc/hylafax/hfaxd.systemd.conf | grep -i faxq
FAXQCLEAN_OPTS=""
FAXQCRON_OPTS=""

In the meantime, how can I safely disable ANY cronjob related to
HylaFAX?

Hi,

Il giorno dom, 01/09/2024 alle 17.15 +0200, Camaleón ha scritto:

hylafax is composed of two daemons, hfaxd is responsible for receiving fax
requests from client machines; faxq is responsible for scheduling and sending
all outgoing faxes. These are the main hylafax systemd services.

Then, you configure faxgetty for all your modems in order to be able to
receive faxes. These are systemd services as well.

Beside systemd services, there is a periodic script ran by cron. It uses
faxqclean in order to remove old faxes (images), and faxcron for removing
logs. These two commands are ran via cron and via /etc/cron.weekly/hylafax.

So, the configuration file /etc/hylafax/hfaxd.conf.systemd contains
information about the server ip addresses, the TCP port numbers, the protocol
to use. It does not run periodic cleaning and does not use FAXQ* variables.

/etc/cron.weekly/hylafax is just a normal shell script. In order to avoid its
execution, you may just add "exit 0" as second line. This script sources
/etc/default/hylafax in order to fetch FAXQ* variables, and provide default
values if these are not set in the configuration file.

The /usr/share/doc/hylafax-server/README.Debian.gz also suggest, in order to
block the cron script, to set both variables as empty:
FAXQCLEAN_OPTS=""
FAXCRON_OPTS=""

Could you check if this solve the problem?

Thank you,
Giuseppe

Ummm... I see.

So, if the two variables have to be set at «/etc/default/hylafax», as
defined by weekly cronjob, the file should be created by default as it
used to be in older Debian versions or at least it should be noticed in
README and/or NEWS becasue is a BIT confusing as it is now :-?

Ok. I will manually create /etc/default/hylafax file, set the variables
in there, fully restore faxes and files from backup, restart services,
test and pray.

Will report/update here the next week about this issue.

Thanks!

The above issue is stil valid.

In addition to the removed files deleted by cronjob task, my other
problem (1) is the same as the bug reporter said:

root@stt005:/mnt/var/spool/hylafax/etc# ls -l /var/spool/hylafax/etc/

I will also have to DISABLE the WEEKLY cronjob routine.

Hi Markus,
I probably found a solution for the following problem:

Il giorno mer, 24/07/2024 alle 18.31 +0200, markus@lindenberg.io ha scritto:

systemd. The periodic script, run by crond, runs in the general mount
namespace. As you pointed out, the "mount --bind" affect *all* processes. I
still cannot understand why this impacts on services that have different
namespaces, but I suspect this is related to the shareable state of the
mounts.

So, I have three different possible solutions. They are:
1. investigate about the systemd shared mount namespace in order to better
isolate systemd service and avoid interactions with the cronjob mount command.
2. change the cronjob and run it with from a systemd timer. That timer would
activate a systemd one shot service that, in turn, can be configured with its
mount namespace as the other daemon services.
3. use some command, in the cronjob, to work on private mount namespaces. It
could be probably done with the "unshare" command from util-linux package, or
with "bwrap" command from bubblewrap package.

Of these three, I am leaning about saying that the second one is more
feasible.

Do you have any comment on these? Did you already try one of them? Would you
volunteer to test a solution?

Thank you,
Giuseppe

After disabling the cron task by manually creating /etc/default/hylafax
file and setting in there the two variables to empty (thus disabling
fax archiving routine) sanity has returned to HylaFAX service:

root@stt005:~# cat /etc/default/hylafax
FAXQCLEAN_OPTS=""
FAXCRON_OPTS=""

So I cannot reproduce this bug anymore.
Sorry for the noise.

Cheers,
