Version in Debian is 1.7.2, which has been released back in 2019!

There have been several releases upstream which fix many bugs (and add a few new features); latest one being 1.9.0 just released in July 2024

is it possible to get sorely missed update for RRDtool package?

Are there any blockers?

If help is needed, I'm willing to put up the work (not a DD, but worked on / maintain few Debian packages).
