Note that I am not using GNOME. I was just told to test some software
with sysprof-cli in the context of a bug report (the bug has eventually
been identified and fixed, but I'm still wondering why I get this
sysprof error).

Could you provide more details about how your system is set up? I am
unable to duplicate the issue, as you have described it here.

Like you could start with Debian in a VM. What are the steps to
experience the same issue?

First, when I install the sysprof package, I notice:

Setting up sysprof (47.2-1) ...
sysprof3.service is a disabled or a static unit, not starting it.

Is this normal?

I use the lightdm display manager with lightdm-gtk-greeter
(i.e. the default greeter), and fvwm2 as my window manager
(no desktop environment).

If needed, I could try to skip my usual setup, in case this matters.

I've attached the strace (compressed), if you can find something
abnormal.

Possibly not needed for the moment, but documentation to do that
would be welcome. I've found mentions of virtualbox, but it is
not installable on Debian/unstable yet, apparently due to the
unfinished python3.13 transition.

I use the gnome-boxes app. The Express Installation feature isn't
working for Debian Testing because xserver-xorg-video-qxl isn't in
Testing, but otherwise the app works well.

If you use a GUI, I recommend installing spice-webdavd and
spice-vdagent inside the guest after it's done installing Debian and
then restart. (The Express Installation feature would do this for
you.)

Given that it works in both GNOME and KDE out of the box, this should be
at most priority:important ("a bug which has a major effect on the
usability of a package, without rendering it completely unusable to
everyone").
