GNOME no longer uses libgnomekbd, and its git repository has been moved
to https://gitlab.gnome.org/Archive/libgnomekbd and archived. This means
that it no longer accepts issue reports or merge requests, even if a
serious problem is found.
The remaining projects that depend on libgnomekbd appear to be
gnome-screensaver (which has, itself, been archived upstream: #895477)
and several Cinnamon packages.
Perhaps the Cinnamon team would be interested in forking libgnomekbd and
becoming its new upstream maintainers? If not, then we should eventually
remove it from Debian.
(X-Debbugs-Cc to budgie-desktop because some budgie-desktop packages
seem to depend on gnome-screensaver, and therefore indirectly depend on
libgnomekbd.)

I didn't look at the code but I noticed that this week Debian MATE began including https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/matekbd-keyboard-display which uses the older fork of libgnomekbd, https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/libmatekbd Thank you, Jeremy Bícha
On cinnamon there is a work in progress that will remove/replace use of libgnomekbd: https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/pull/12758 I don't know when it will be ready, I haven't followed it well or tested it but that remake seems quite big to me and I suppose it might not be completed for the next version of cinnamon but it will take more time
I'm raising the severity because it looks doable for libgnomekbd to be removed from Debian before Debian 14 is released. budgie-control-center in experimental no longer uses libgnomekbd. Cinnamon 6.6 no longer uses libgnomekbd according to https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_zena_whatsnew.php Cinnamon has a lot of components so I don't know if every piece was ported away from libgnomekbd yet. (I know that cinnamon-screensaver still uses caribou for instance.). Practically, libgnomekbd won't be removed from Testing as long as Cinnamon uses it, according to the current way Debian defines key packages. Thank you, Jeremy Bícha
https://people.debian.org/~smcv/temp/2025/mbf-libgnomekbd/ and in addition to cinnamon-screensaver, the answer is: cinnamon cinnamon-control-center cinnamon-settings-daemon gnome-screensaver xapp I'll open bugs if they don't already exist. smcv
Done. I didn't bother to open a new bug for gnome-screensaver since it's
on its way to being removed anyway, but we can use #895477.
