The above is just how the build ends and not necessarily the most relevant part.
If required, the full build log is available here:

https://people.debian.org/~sanvila/build-logs/202501/

About the archive rebuild: The build was made on virtual machines from AWS,
using sbuild and a reduced chroot with only build-essential packages.

If you could not reproduce the bug please contact me privately, as I
am willing to provide ssh access to a virtual machine where the bug is
fully reproducible.

If this is really a bug in one of the build-depends, please use
reassign and add an affects on src:spamassassin, so that this is still
visible in the BTS web page for this package.

Thanks.

Hello. Since version 4.0.1 is now in stable, this is now
happening in stable as well.

This does not happen always, but it happens often enough
to consider it not suitable for release.

In my tests, this fails 100% of the time on
single-CPU systems and 40% of the time on systems
with 2 CPUs. I think that's bad enough.

Based on those tests, I recommend that you try
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nr_cpus=1" first. If that does
not work please contact me privately, and I will
gladly provide a VM to test.

Thanks.

Note: I'm giving Noah an AWS instance of the same
type as the ones on which this failure happened for me,
but after some tests on such instance the bug
may be a Heisenbug.

I'm downgrading again for the time being.

Thanks.

Hi.

I've put a cron job in the AWS instance so that the package
is built every 30 minutes. This is the result so far:

spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T13:30:01Z.build:Status: successful
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T14:00:01Z.build:Status: successful
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T14:30:01Z.build:Status: successful
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T15:00:01Z.build:Status: attempted
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T15:30:02Z.build:Status: successful
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T16:00:02Z.build:Status: attempted
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T16:30:02Z.build:Status: attempted
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T17:00:02Z.build:Status: attempted
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T17:30:01Z.build:Status: successful
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T18:00:02Z.build:Status: attempted
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T18:30:01Z.build:Status: attempted
spamassassin_amd64-2025-03-15T19:00:02Z.build:Status: successful

So, while it's true that the failure does not always happen,
I think it's fair to consider that "the randomness is reproducible".

Not touching the severity, but I'm doing a retitle to better
describe the true nature of the bug.

[ Sorry for my initial misdiagnosis, I first got a lot of
failures in a row and I believed it always failed ].

Thanks.

Hi.

Sorry for the late reply. This is my proposal to fix the build failure
for trixie, in debdiff format. I've actually tested the patch and it works.

Note that this bug is also present in the current stable distribution (bookworm).

(In case you prefer to debug this, my offer for a VM where this happens 100%
of the time still holds).

Thanks.

Because I definitely didn't see a 100% repro rate there. In fact, I
wasn't able to trigger the repro at all in the last few dozen attempts.

You are right that I was taking the statistics in my autobuilding setup
(which I'm attaching here) for the above figure.

I usually take for granted that a consistent failure in my autobuilding
setup will produce a consistent failure in a VM of the same type
which I offer for debugging. For some reason there are some differences
between those two setups, and I still don't know the reason.

I have now created a new VM (for which I can offer ssh access)
and I've put this script:

thanks

Hello. I'm only unarchiving this bug (not reopening it), but I believe
the package in bookworm (which is still a supported distribution),
should be fixed as well.

[ The above tag is to prevent the bug from being automatically archived again ]

Thanks.
