When I try to run a program that needs to request the root password graphically, such as Synaptic, the password is requested in the terminal.

Example:

     `~ synaptic-pkexec
     ==== AUTHENTICATING FOR com.ubuntu.pkexec.synaptic ====

     Authentication is required to run the Synaptic Package Manager/

     Authenticating as: root

     Password: `

I have a related problem, but pkexec doesn't request a password at all.

synaptic-pkexec  shows no output at terminal, and no password is
requested. I can't unlock printer settings and can't start virt-manager
as both needs root password.

I'm using Cinnamon desktop environment in Debian testing, updated as
