   * What led up to the situation? When I turned my computer on, I found that
my display was locked to 800x600. I think that this is related to recent
updates. Upon further examination, I found that the package `nvidia-driver` was
gone. When attempting to reinstall it, I get apt errors that indicate that a
needed dependency does not exist. I have contrib, non-free, and non-free-
firmware in my sources.list for all repositories and I had it working until
vaguely today with no changes except apt update, apt dist-upgrade, and apt
autoremove. I tried running this sequence of commands again, along with faffing
about with apt-get -f install and similiar. I also tried installing the
offending missing package manually, but apt still detects it as missing. As
such, I think that some upstream error exists and the repository is in an
inconsistent state, hence the grave severity. I am not certain about this,
however, so please reclassify if others do not experience this issue.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)? I have tried installing the package firmware-nvidia-gsp from
a manual .deb download, but apt still thinks that it's unavailable.
   * What was the outcome of this action? See above
   * What outcome did you expect instead? I expected that I'd at least have a
usable system while waiting on a more permanent fix.

That very much sounds like you are missing a package source for
non-free-firmware.

`apt-cache policy` would tell what you have configured.
