For a few weeks now (perhaps after every second or third sleep), awakening from sleep fails too often. More precisely, when I hit the Shift key or click a mouse button when the PC is asleep, it starts waking up (the LED indicating power switches from flashing between on and off every second to being continuously on), but the screen remains black. The keyboard remains unresponsive to hitting the LED keys (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock). Hitting the key sequence Alt+(SysRq, R, E, I, S, U, B) has no visible effect. Pushing the reboot button has no visible effect. (On another freeze, pinging the PC has no effect; I don't try it out each time.) Observationally, the PC has frozen. Only pressing the power button for 6–10 seconds has a visible effect: the computer goes off. After the last such freeze, we find this in the journal:

The remaining text is all usual white (or light grey, if you prefer to call it this way). The processor is Intel(R) Xeon(R) W-2235 CPU @ 3.80GHz, the motherboard is ASUS WS C422 PRO/SE, and the graphics card is NVIDIA Palit® GeForce® GTX 1660 STORMX (for whatever reason, they format Palit as PλLIΤ); the driver nouveau is in use.

Needless to say, please repair the bug.

retitle 1106668 Waking up from suspend to RAM reproducibly leads to a hard freeze

severity 1106668 important

thanks

More info:

- Upon waking up, the hard drive succeeds to spin up; the typical sound of its mechanics is heard.

- Hitting none of the LED keys (Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock) works: all the LED lights remain off.

- Pinging the PC doesn't work: “Destination unreachable: Address unreachable”.

- Upon restarting (pressing the power button long until power off, waiting a bit, and then pressing and releasing it):

   * The BIOS/UEFI startup routines print, “The system has POSTed in safe mode. This may be due to the previous POST attempt failing because of system instability, or if the power button was held in to force the system off. If the system failed to POST after you made changes to UEFI settings, you may wish to revert to stable settings to prevent POST failure. Press F1 to Run SETUP”. The startup routines show no failure otherwise.

   * The message speaking about filesystem check shows up long sometimes.

   * Manually choosing to sleep from the menu of the GDM login screen and then trying to wake up by hitting a key also leads to freeze. This is reproducible now. So an influence typical user programs (such as Firefox or its plugins) can be ruled out.

   * On the same PC, Windows 11 reproducibly succeeds to manually fall asleep into energy saving (suspend to RAM) and then to wake up when we hit [Esc] or [Shift]. So a software issue somewhere inside Linux (kernel, drivers, modules, …) seems more likely than a hardware one.

I've raised severity because of reproducibility and because I do need the PC to be able to suspend to RAM every night so that I can resume work the next day.

Here is a log from another sleep, followed by a wakeup with freeze, then pressing and holding a power button for a several seconds, then hitting and releasing the power button:

When I switched from nouveau to the proprietary nvidia-driver (after manually enrolling the public key /var/lib/dkms/mok.pub, rebooting, and following the prompts in the MOK utility upon startup according to https://wiki.debian.org/SecureBoot), resuming from suspend started working. So the bug is likely to be related to the nouveau driver (or the NVIDIA card). I have xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.18-1 and libdrm-nouveau2 2.4.124-2 installed. Please feel free to reassign the bug report (or not).

Today, the PC failed to resume from suspend twice (out of three suspends) although nvidia-driver runs instead of nouveau. So either both nouveau and nvidia-driver are faulty or none of them. Or we have similar faults with various causes. In any case, I am no longer sure that nouveau is the culprit, so I am removing nouveau from affects. Below we find the log from the last resume failure after a manual suspend via the gnome menu; the message “/etc/dhcp/dhclient-exit-hooks.d/zzz_avahi-autoipd returned non-zero exit status 1” is red.

Hello Peter,

That might be a BIOS issue. I guess there is no BIOS update available
for your machine?

If the problems still occur on the newest BIOS, the debugging you need
to do is described on

https://docs.kernel.org/power/basic-pm-debugging.html

Depending on your findings we might get an idea how to fix your issue.
So please report back your test results.

Best regards
Uwe

Thanks for asking! Not yet - I'm extremely busy, so I temporarily turned off the sleep mode. It's tiresome that section 2 of https://docs.kernel.org/power/basic-pm-debugging.html is not standalone but refers to section 1 (and I probably wouldn't be able to test hibernation in safe mode and without swap anyway) and says, “use the s2ram tool […] documented at http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Suspend_to_RAM (S2RAM_LINK)”, whereas the linked document has no occurrence of “s2ram” at all. Anyhow, I hope to come to this, so please leave the bug report open for now.

During my tests mentioned here, the freeze on wakeup/resume has not been triggered. (However, the freeze still happened several hours earlier when gdm3 was showing its login screen, then automatically went to sleep, and then I tried to wake it up by hitting some key.)

What next? Reboot with some nondefault kernel parameters, or hunt down “xHC error in resume”, or do anything else?

Hello Peter,

If I read your feedback correctly you couldn't reproduce the hang using
the PM debug stuff, right? In the original report you said that the
issue doesn't happen each time for a full suspend/resume, maybe try the
debug steps several times, too?! I'd wish to have a better idea, but
currently I don't :-\
details to the x86 maintainers (Thomas Gleixner <tglx@kernel.org>, Ingo
Molnar <mingo@redhat.com>, Borislav Petkov <bp@alien8.de>, Dave Hansen
<dave.hansen@linux.intel.com>, x86@kernel.org,
linux-kernel@vger.kernel.org), maybe they could ask a few smart
questions or even know something.

Could you try to contact them, either describing the issue shortly and
refering to the bug webpage for details or add everything to the mail?
Keep the bug on Cc: for that.

Best regards
Uwe
