   * What led up to the situation?

upgrading from grub packages 2.12-8 to 2.12-9

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

using keyboard to select boot option worked but no display was visible until
linux kernel was actually booting.

commenting out GRUB_TERMINAL=console and re-running update-grub produced a
visible graphical mode boot menu.

downgrading to 2.12-8 and re-running update-grub restored console mode boot menu
