(Please provide enough information to help the Debian
maintainers evaluate the report efficiently - e.g., by filling
in the sections below.)

My previous release is: bookworm
I am upgrading to: trixie
Archive date:
Upgrade date: Tue 29 Jul 11:20:34 UTC 2025
uname -a before upgrade: current bookworm, sorry, didn't record uname -a
uname -a after upgrade: Linux calvin 6.12.38+deb13-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.12.38-1 (2025-07-16) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Method: apt upgrade --without-new-pkgs ; apt full-upgrade

Contents of /etc/apt/sources.list:
Empty - removed by apt modernize-sources which provoked the bug in
synaptic

$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.sources

- Were there any non-Debian packages installed before the upgrade? If
  so, what were they?

  No

- Was the system pre-update a 'pure' system only containing packages
from the previous release? If not, which packages were not from that
  release?

Pure system, from a current bookworm netinst ISO

- Did any packages fail to upgrade?

  No

- Were there any problems with the system after upgrading?

  No, until loading synaptic.

Further Comments/Problems:

Synaptic continues to function for package operations.

Please attach the output of "COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l" (or "env COLUMNS ...",
depending on your shell) from before and after the upgrade so that we
know what packages were installed on your system.

Hi Neil,

For the record, you should specify the version of synaptic you are using.

Cheers,
Bill.

Hi Bill,

Sorry, I tested in a local VM and I tried to attach the dpkg -l output
requested by reportbug but it failed to appear in the bug report.

Synaptic is at version 0.91.7 in the trixie VM.

It probably is a bug in synaptic. I was following the advice in
https://www.debian.org/releases/trixie/release-notes/upgrading.html#preparing-apt-sources-files

I can confirm this bug - running synaptic 0.91.7 in Debian Unstable.

Screenshot and /etc/apt.sources.list.d/debian.sources attached.
