I am using mdadm-based raid mirrors for my / file systems on some servers.
I am not using systemd, but this package (orphan-sysvinit-scripts) was already
installed.  After an upgrade to trixie on one such system, it does not boot.
I have currently no access to its console...

On a second similar system (this) I had also performed the update but not yet
rebooted...
On investigation, the file  /etc/init.d/mdadm  is missing.

As far as I can see, this should be installed by

 /usr/lib/orphan-sysvinit-scripts/update_init_d.sh

if the file

 /lib/systemd/system/mdadm.service

exists.  However, that file does not exist.  It looks like it would have come
from the mdadm package in bookworm [1], but no longer in trixie [2].
I suppose this breaks the heuristic in this package for when to install the
mdadm init scripts.

If I cheat a bit and do 'touch /lib/systemd/system/mdadm.service'
followed by running '/usr/lib/orphan-sysvinit-scripts/update_init_d.sh'
then /etc/init.d/mdadm is at least created.

And similary for mdadm-waitidle.service to get mdadm-waitidle.

I have not tested yet if this is sufficient to successfully reboot the system.
(Will only reboot when being physically at the machines. :) )

If you'd updated orphan-sysvinit-scripts first (i.e. before mdadm), then
I think it would have worked OK (because I think then o-s-s would have
installed the init script, and it's then not removed it on later upgrade).

But this is obviously a problem - I think when the mdadm script was
added to o-s-s, mdadm.service was in the then-current package.

I think the closest replacement service is probably
/usr/lib/systemd/system/mdmonitor.service

...so I should update o-s-s to look for that rather than mdadm.service,
I think.

The same problem will also impact mdadm-waitidle, which there doesn't
seem to be an obvious systemd service for now (presumably it's handled
by /usr/lib/systemd/system-shutdown/mdadm.shutdown ).

Hi,

the problem with the machine not booting was not the missing mdadm script,
but that I had managed to scramble one of the raid members*, such that the
root filesystem could not be mounted.  Also an fsck did not work.
After failing that raid member, booting worked!

* Likely due to running grub-install manually, just to be 'safe'.
   That did not turn out too well..

However, the /etc/init.d/mdadm was as expected found to be missing.

I'm now on thin ice, since I do not know what is needed for booting with
an md device to be sucessful, or how the necessary parts are found when
the initramfs image is built.

In case it is of any help, I attach a list of files in the initramfs
before and after tricking /etc/init.d/mdadm into existance as in the
original report.  Also a dmesg before and after.

I do not see any significance differences between any of the files.
That is perhaps to be expected, since boot was successful.

Since the missing /etc/init.d/mdadm was not the cause of the machine
becoming unbootable, I think the severity of this bug lowered.
