Dear maintainer,

I suggest removing printrun from Debian for the following reasons:
 * It accumulated one RC-bug:
   + #1050157: printrun: broken 3D view due to pyglet 2+
     Last modified: 2 years

 * It is not part of trixie or forky and is not a key package.

This bug serves as a pre-removal warning. After one month, the bug will be
reassigned to ftp.debian.org to actually request removal of the package.

In case the package should be kept in unstable, please evaluate each of the
RC-bugs listed above.
 * If the bug is meant to permanently prevent the package from entering testing
   or a stable release, but this package should stay part of unstable, please
   add a usertag:

       user helmutg@debian.org
       usertags NNN + sidremove-ignore

 * If the bug no longer applies, please close it. If it is closed, check
   whether the fixed version is correct and adjust if necessary.

 * Is the bug really release-critical? If not, please downgrade.

 * If the bug still applies, please send a status update at least once a year.

Once all of the mentioned RC bugs have been acted upon in one way or another,
please close this bug.

In case the package should be removed from unstable, you may reassign this
bug report:

    Control: severity -1 normal
    Control: retitle -1 RM: printrun -- RoM; rc-buggy
    Control: reassign -1 ftp.debian.org
    Control: affects -1 + src:printrun

Alternatively, you may wait a month and have it reassigned.

In case you disagree with the above, please add a wontfix tag to this bug.

    Control: tags -1 + wontfix

Doing so will also prevent automatic reassignment.

In case anyone wonders what is going on here, I wanted to explain the
removal decision here.

IMHO, the printrun package at its current state does not meet the
quality standards to be part of Debian. It's been affected by bug
#1050157, which renders the 3D view unsable. It is true that this only
affects the proterface and platter utilities from the suite, but the
former is probably the most used and more famous. I mean, a new user
would expect to have the pronterface utility available when they install
printrun, and complaints would surely be raised if it were otherwise.
This is the reason why printrun wasn't part of trixie or forky releases.

Keeping it on unstable like this is not great since there are some
libraries that printrun depends upon that are now outdated/deprecated
and can't be fully removed unless printrun is removed as well. Patching
it just to keep it in unstable will lead to a dead end cause it will
still need pyglet < 2 anyway.

It saddens me to see this package out of Debian but until upstream fixes
the pyglet issue I don't think it is worth the effort.

As far as I can see, the only problematic package (aside from Pyglet 1.5) was python3-appdir, but that was replaced with python3-platformdirs in printrun 2.2.0 anyway.

Consequently, I do understand the argument about users expecting pronterface to be part of the suite, but I don't think it would be too much trouble to only package the parts that don't need a GUI.

That's sad indeed, but since I don't use printrun myself, I don't have a strong argument.

In that case, let's initiate removal - or wait until it happens automatically.
