Comments/Problems:
The system has two network adapters, one on the motherboard and one
PCI-card.
During the install the second NIC (PCI-card) was unplugged.
The installer detected both NICs and selected automatically the first
one as it had an active link.
The installer configured the device via DHCP and the install finished.
After the initial reboot, DHCP configured the network and it worked.
Later second NIC was also plugged in, and the system was booted, the
network did not work.
After the initial reboot, this was in the NetworkManager config file in
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Wired connection 1.
The device selected/working in the installation is not stored in the
NM-config.
(------ used to indicate empty line at the beginning and end)
------
[connection]
id=Wired connection 1
uuid=9762642c-bbc5-482d-a019-a9a20f13a550
type=802-3-ethernet
[802-3-ethernet]
[ipv4]
method=auto
[ipv6]
method=auto
ip6-privacy=2
------
In NM, the device for the connection was of course shown empty, manually
selecting the device and saving makes the network working properly.
The config file then is this:
------
[connection]
id=Wired connection 1
uuid=9762642c-bbc5-482d-a019-a9a20f13a550
type=ethernet
interface-name=enp5s0

addr-gen-mode=stable-privacy
ip6-privacy=2

------
Additional tests made to check the network behavior with the initial
config file:
when only first NIC plugged in:
config is fetched via DHCP and assigned to the primary NIC even though
not in the config (it has the only active link) and the network is working.
when the second NIC is also plugged in:
not configured, just plugged in; the sytem sees two NICs with active
link, the network fails to work - unplugging triggers NM to configure
the primary NIC.
This can cause a situation, that when the administration of a system is
only remotely done and the second NIC is plugged in at a later time, the
system becomes unreachable after a reboot because for the primary
connection no device was assigned first.
I shared this experience here:
https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=163713
Otherwise, installation is easy, fast and smooth - system runs well.
Even though the only line of the syslog file of the installation (that I
can think of that is related to the issue)
Sep 5 23:46:00 finish-install: info: Running
/usr/lib/finish-install.d/50config-target-network
does not provide any useful information to this issue. I have attached
the complete file.
