Dear Debian Maintainers,

I’m reporting a bug that affects Debian 13 (Plasma desktop, tested on both
X11 and Wayland) with the HP Linux Printing and Imaging System (HPLIP) and
a HP DeskJet 2700 Series printer.

**Issue:**
The HP Device Manager (HPLIP Toolbox) fails to communicate with the printer
when connected via USB. It shows the error “Unable to communicate with
device (code=12)” and does not display ink levels, even though printing and
scanning through CUPS work correctly.

**Investigation:**
I attempted multiple reinstallations of HPLIP and related drivers and
tested under both X11 and Wayland sessions. None of these resolved the
issue. I eventually discovered that the `ipp-usb` service was taking
control of the printer and preventing the `hp:/usb/` backend from working
properly.

**Solution:**
1. Stop the `ipp-usb` service:
2. Mask the service so it doesn’t start automatically:
After masking `ipp-usb`, the HPLIP Toolbox immediately detected the printer
and displayed ink levels, a feature HP claims is not available on DeskJet
models.

**Impact:**
Users running Debian 13 with HP USB printers can restore full HPLIP
functionality, including ink‑level monitoring, by stopping and masking
`ipp-usb`. This report aims to help improve the integration between
`ipp-usb` and HPLIP or provide guidance on how to avoid such conflicts.

Hello!

I had similar problems with the old hplip package of Trixie.
So i made a new debian package of hplip 3.24.4 with all important / needed
patches (like Ubuntu). There is an updated patchset inside the debian file.

I think this newer version could help you with you printer, too.

thanks a lot for doing an update on HPLIP which got neglected for 3.5 years (!),
from 3.22.10.

But is there no newer version than 3.24.4 (which is already near 2 years old)?
Once doing this effort on a package with so many patches, you should get right
away to the newest version.

for me the step to 3.24.4 was important because of a new printer.
But you are right. My next step in the next weeks will be switching
to hplip 3.25.8. Then I can inform you (and others) again.
