it seems there are several problems (or a single problem affecting
several drivers). Does a normal (i.e. non-rt) kernel work better?

my reply didnt seem to work before, sorry about the delay i didnt
realise it hadnt appeared

no, a normal kernel doesnt work any better. ive tried this on a couple
of different machines, the ae-7 just hangs in all of them. other sound
cards, including previous creative ones, work just fine.
