The upstream tarball is being downloaded with the .tar.lz extension,
which is not supported by dpkg-source:

I believe you need to repack the upstream tarball to a supported format.

Hi,

upstream does not reliably provide other compression formats, means,
sometimes when a new release is uploaded to the GNU server, only lz
format is available.

therefore, in order to still detect these releases, the watch file
points to the lz file.

this is better than to ignore those, but doesn't work with uscan which
is not a problem as I'm creating a xz tarball automatically when
uploading from git to debian, so of course no lz tarballs are uploaded
to debian which is, as you correctly stated, not supported.

Sure, this is not a problem.

Right, but there is a way to automatically request uscan to repack the
tarball using another compression format.  If you look at uscan's
manpage, you will see mentions to "repack" and "repacksuffix".  This is
what this request is about :-).
