Hi,

I am currently struggling to find time to keep riseup-vpn in shape, and I
have to spend non-trivial amount of efforts to maintain it.

I'd also appreciate if someone could actually test this from time to time on
their own and help out with fixes.

The recent QT update broke things here at least on my laptop and it'd be nice
to have help from someone test and try out patches. I managed patches for this time
but had to spend quite some cycles to debug it. One of the patches is quite bad, and
I decided to not use it -- so a co-maintainer for such situations would be very
helpful.

If you are interested, please talk to me and I'd be happy to add you in to uploaders.

Hi Nilesh,

I've been a regular user of Debian for about 4 years and a user of riseup vpn for almost 2 years. I've compiled riseup from source before it became a package in Debian. However, I have only rudimentary C++ programming skills and barely made a QT application for a hobby project. But I'd love to start contributing to the debian project and therefore help co-maintain riseup-vpn to the best of my abilities. Let me know how to proceed further, if its alright with you.
Kind regards,
Ganesh

Hi,

Please note that I don't get mails on any bug report I (or anyone else) file(s) by default - it was only by chance that I saw this. Please CC me in future if
you want me to read your mail/want a response.

Do you have debian packaging experience - or are at least familiar? If not, I am unsure if co-maintenance would be a lot of help for me.

But, at least so we start somewhere, could you check if my fix[1] for bug report #1124472 works?
The full context is at the same bug report. If you could confirm this to be working, that'd be quite helpful for me.
(Note that this is on stable with the version of the same in stable).

Additionally, if you could also check if it works on an unstable system (with the version in unstable without any workarounds), that'd be nice too.

Note that we would need pristine/clean systems to check this. So ideally a VM with default clean debian install with cinnamon.

Hi,

I do not have any packaging experience unfortunately. I'm familiar with it as in read about it and watched some YT videos.

- I've set up debuild and quilt as per [1]
- apt source riseup-vpn
- sudo apt build-dep riseup-vpn
- dquilt new fixup-policykit-depends-in-a-better-way.patch
- dquilt add debian/control
- Update debian/control with whats provided in the patch
- dquilt refresh
- dquilt header -e <patch description>
- dch -i
- debuild -b -uc -us
- Build finished with no errors
- sudo dpkg -i ../riseup-vpn_0.24.10+ds1-1+deb13u1.1_amd64.deb
- sudo apt install -f
- sudo dpkg -i ../riseup-vpn_0.24.10+ds1-1+deb13u1.1_amd64.deb

When I run it, I get the same error of "could not find polkit agent" as in #1124472. I checked my system and none of the policykits (which are ORed in the control file) are installed it seems. Maybe my way of resolving the dependencies is incorrect (apt install -f) if so do let me know. I say this because when I list the dependencies using dpkg, they do come up. Maybe apt is pulling just the dependencies of official riseup-vpn package in the repositories.
Here is the result of 'dpkg -I ../riseup-vpn_0.24.10+ds1-1+deb13u1.1_amd64.deb'
new Debian package, version 2.0.

Description: Easy, fast, and secure VPN service from riseup.net
Riseup offers Personal VPN service for censorship circumvention,
location anonymization and traffic encryption. To make this possible, it
sends all user's internet traffic through an encrypted connection to

As you may have noticed, this is a bit of a complicated package, so I'd recommend trying to maintain something simple first.
But if you still feel like taking up the challenge and are up for doing upstream updates, testing, fixing code downstream and sending them upstream (which
has been quite frequent lately), feel free to add yourself as one of the uploaders.

There's actually no need to add files inside debian directory to quilt patches. These can be directly modified.

It actually does and I realized this is a bug even in unstable. Cinnamon provides "polkit-1-auth-agent" virtual package which is
listed there.

I've added a patch and uploaded to stable, unstable and backports. Changes are in the salsa repository -
debian/sid, debian/trixie-pu, debian/trixie-backports branches respectively.

If you could still build the package from trixie-pu branch and confirm that it fixed the
issue (I know it does, but still), that'd be cool.

Hi,

Apologies for the delayed response - I was trying to fix my laptop for about a month.

Though I'd like to take up the challenge, I need some initial mentoring. So I'll try to maintain / co-maintain a simpler package, gain some experience and then get back onto riseup-vpn if it is still in WNPP.

And yes, I've tried the patch and it does fix the issue.

Hello,

I will not be able to maintain riseup-vpn any further and have performed an upload
with my name dropped from the Uploaders field. Hence, anyone interested may join the
go packaging team and add themselves as uploaders for this package.

Some (Build-)Dependencies of riseup-vpn have also no uploader, so consider doing the
same for those package as well, if you want to maintain riseup-vpn.

Thanks,
Nilesh
