Dear maintainer, I see that the package education-astronomy (version 2.13.4) suggests xtide and xtide-data which are not in unstable. This can be seen in https://packages.debian.org/unstable/education-astronomy . Search for "Package not available". The missing packages used to be in Debian but they were removed some time ago: - https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/xtide - https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/xtide-data Should they be dropped or changed? Thank you,
Hi Carles, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Carles Pina i Estany schreef op ma 13-10-2025 om 21:27 [+0200]: Indeed, xtide and xtide-data were removed from debian because they were no longer maintained, though they still are maintained upstream. As far as I know there is no alternative available in Debian, so I will remove them from Suggests in debian-edu.

Hi Carles, hi Frans, esp. the education-*-* packages), the Suggests: field is programmatically used for software that is not available in Debian testing. This could imply that the software is not in Debian, but we could reintroduce it at some later point in time. So, I'd actually vote for ignoring the Suggests: field in education-*-* packages and leave the packages in there. In fact, I am currently involved in a packaging project where we might bring more Edu software (back) into Debian. If xtide has returned, we simply need to update debian-edu src:pkg and xtide jumps back into the Recommends: field. What do you think? Mike
Hi Mike, Carles, Mike Gabriel schreef op do 13-11-2025 om 08:20 [+0000]: Oh, I see, I was'nt aware of it. So, the best thing to do is to reintroduce the Suggests on xtide and xtide-data and to reopen Bug#1118016, I guess. Isn't it?
Hi Frans, hi Carles, Not exactly. The best is to revert your recent changes, yes. Next time you want to modify the software recommendations/suggestions of debian-edu derived bin:pkgs, please do that in https://salsa.debian.org/debian-edu/debian-edu/-/tree/master/tasks The debian-edu src:pkg is a Debian blends generated package, so debian/control should not be edited manually. It gets generated via the Debian blends tooling. Regarding related bugs: #1118016 [w| | ] [education-astronomy] education-astronomy: suggests xtide and xtide-data which are not in unstable #1118017 [w| | ] [education-chemistry] education-chemistry: suggests gdis which is not in unstable #1118079 [w| | ] [education-common] education-common: suggests cpqarrayd, dpt-i2o-raidutils and raidutils which are not in unstable #1118080 [w| | ] [education-desktop-other] education-desktop-other: suggests kvpm and tablix2 which are not in unstable #1118081 [w| | ] [education-geography] education-geography: suggests googleearth-package and qlandkartegt which are not in unstable #1118082 [w| | ] [education-video] education-video: suggests kino which is not in unstable In my opinion they should all be closed and tagged with wontfix. Can you do that Frans? Thanks, Mike
