I just got a Gnome popup notification that I should donate. I am doing
enough open source work already that I don't need this. Please disable
it by default.

Control: tags -1 wontfix
Control: severity -1 wishlist
Control: reassign -1 src:gnome-settings-daemon 49.0-1
Control: affects -1 + src:gnome-shell gnome
so the notification is not going to be removed from Debian at this
time. The reminder notification is set to only show twice per year.
There is a similar successful KDE campaign.

You can disable the donation notification on your systems with this command:
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.housekeeping
donation-reminder-enabled false

Hello,

I had the same banner, and I got a bad taste in my mouth. Happily a
debian fellow pointed me to this bug. Jay!

Part of me wishes to see GNOME to be or become a healthy organization. I
disagree with the path taken.

Nagging users of free software with popups will inevitably lead to a
screen full of banners. Then a counter movement will spring to life and
software will be created to do ad blocking in the notificationstream.

I think it is a very unwise decision to allow for this.

Has debian pondered allowing the gnome project a small banner on the
debian.org website? Has GNOME pondered giving a talk on Fosdem (eg) to
announce the financial problems? There's so much more options than
littering a notification channel.

Maintaining a default-enabled donation prompt in gnome-control-center
without informed user consent is a clear violation of Debian Social
Contract Clause 4 and a threat to user trust. Report #1135385
re-characterizes the issue as not merely technical, and dismissing
this as a “duplicate” is not a mere procedural decision, but
continued ethical failure. Debian maintainers are stewards, and
allowing external fundraising agendas to override user interests (via
clear notification opt-in or removal entirely) undermines Debian’s
principles and reputation. This matter must be escalated to the Debian
Technical Committee under Constitution 6.1.4 for formal review. This
continued inaction, and anything less than swift action, only reflects
the deliberate choice to continued to compromise Debian’s integrity,
and the community deserves better. Stepping down as package maintainer
is now strongly warranted. Three strikes and you're OUT, as the adage
goes:
1) disabling the banner when the package hit your desk the first time
before push

Reported to DTC myself because maintainer refused to do so in any
attempt at good faith, when firmly aware of
