After 6.20.0-1 upgrade this morning, In many location I cannot enter directory. If I click
on folder, it does open and the path in the upper of the window keeps adding directory
name

Eg :

I have a directrory /multimedia that contains sevral subdirectorries like
Music, Video, Photos, Books

If I click on books, Id does not hoppen it but adds it in path. And if I click several time
the path becomes /multimedia/books/books/books...

That of course does not exist.

Maybe just a rebuild is needed but this is really annoying

I tried to find a more precise pattern but failed. It still works for
certain directory not for others.

The directory where I can reproduce it always is a NTFS3 mount but I
checked it on windows and there is no error. I have another one that is
on a ext4 file system with same problem that sometimes occurs, sometime not.

Also using cd/ls it does correctly list the files.

Maybe the only common pattern I see, is that directory that does not
work have many files in them.

I noticed something:

If I start from / then clik on multimedia I can correctly navigate
in my multimedia directory but if I click on the Volume name on the
sidebar, I cannot.

/dev/nvme0n1p1 on /multimedia type ntfs3
(rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,discard,iocharset=utf8)

Also I noticed the \u0000 in the mount point name that does not
exist in the real path.

Same for /home that is on ext4. It seems that clicking on the
peripheral list (available mounted and non mounted FS), it incorrectly
adds \u0000 to the name

I have this error message when ckicking on HOME mount point from
sidebar peripherals:

I tried to start without debug from command line specifying a file url

org.kde.dolphin: could not find entry for charset= "Autre encodage ()"

kf.kio.workers.trash: Directory "/boot/efi\u0000/.Trash-1000" exists but
didn't pass the security checks, can't use it
...

Same for all mounted filesystems.

So I will be unable to provide infos as it use all the mounted directory
to search for trash file with the wrong name already.

But probably it means that somewhere it list all mounted fs for trash
handling and that the bug is already there...

If you have any more guidance to

	1) include debug packages at least for dolphin. I only get old style
package source info...
	2) set a breakpoint for trash handling

And thanks for your help.

Hi Eric

I'm quite sure that it is this extra \u0000 that is the cause of these
troubles. I couldn't quickly reproduce it myself, but it could be some path
handling changes suddenly the null termination is included, and it might only
show up on some systems/usecases.

Given you have a long history in Debian, I hope you are a bit confident in the
console.

If you do the following:

QT_FATAL_WARNINGS=1 gdb dolphin

Then dolphin should crash when it gets to printing "Broken filename passed to
function"

Then you should be able to do "bt" in the gdb command line and provide a
backtrace. Then we might get an idea where the string gets passed from (and
thus where it gets wrongly created)

I think you need to install libkf6kiocore6-dbgsym from the debug archive

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian-debug/ unstable-debug main

and that at least should give better symbols from the backtrace you have.
The backtraces does point to kiocore, which is very much where my initial
suspicion of which part of frameworks would be responsible for this.

I think that is the issue, but not where it originates from. But we basically
need to chase that path up the callstack to figure out where it is introduced.

I think kio6-dbgsym is also needed.

And maybe it originates from a different thread, so in gdb, thread apply all bt
might also give a bit of insight, if payload around frame 16.

Dear Maintainer,

I noticed this issue after today's update., I noticed this issue following today's update.
This probably also happened after the 11/17/2025 update, because when I rolled back the snapshot version to 17, the error still occurred,
This probably also happened after the 11/17/2025 update, because when I rolled back the snapshot version to 17, the error still persisted.
Only the version from November 16, 2025 worked properly, Only the version from 16/11/2025 worked properly
What I did was clean and remove the trash:

find /home/pawelec -type f -name ".directory" -delete 2>/dev/null
find /home/pawelec -type d -name ".directory" -exec rm -rf {} + 2>/dev/null
rm -rf ~/.local/share/Trash

chmod 700 ~/.local/share/Trash/{files,info}

The only thing that works is using the space group in the side panel.
Moreover, when using a device group, the icon of lack of permissions to the directory is constantly displayed in the address bar.

Hi, thanks for reporting and all the follow-up analysis.

The most probable root cause is that I didn’t correctly refresh a patch we
carry in solid to work around some limitation in mount points handling.

See [1] and [2] and the bug it was fixing at [3].

[3] https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=762950

I discussed it with the team and our Kubuntu kontact and since the patch is
disabled in Kubuntu the best course of action maybe to simply drop the patch
at this stage.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

If Qt/KDE Team participants from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away have
ideas on this, you’re input is welcome.

Why not upstrean the patch? The problem it fixes seems not very Debian
specific.
