#1123760 cryptsetup autopkgtest timeouts on amd64 since host switch

Dear maintainer(s),

Your package has an autopkgtest, great. However, recently we had to
switch our amd64 host (from ci-worker13 to ci-worker-amd64-01) and now
it fails on amd64. What's worse, it fails because it seems to hang and
eventually times out due to autopkgtest. Can you please investigate the
situation and fix it? I copied some of the output at the bottom of this
report.

Please contact us (#debci or debian-ci@l.d.o) if you think there is
something we should fix on the infrastructure side, we may have
overlooked something.

The release team has announced [1] that failing autopkgtest on amd64 and
arm64 are considered RC in testing. Also tests that time out (while
normally running in much less time) are bad for our infrastructure. I
have added your package to our reject_list and will remove it once this
bug is closed.

Hi,

Has the new host fewer hypervisor capabilities? I see a couple of QEMU
and early boot errors which didn't occur before and which I can't
reproduce locally either:

I note that autopkgtest-virt-qemu (which works) runs vith 2 vCPUs which
might be something worth trying, but otherwise I wonder how to debug
this since I can't reproduce the issue locally and I suppose uploading
new packages and using debci for trial and error isn't desirable either.

Given autopkgtest-virt-qemu works, could you please provide its
qemu-system command line for comparison? There might be something to
tweak in our tests there. Having the boot messages (`--show-boot` flag)
for comparison could be helpful too.

Cheers

Same issue for src:mkosi and src:systemd autopkgtest. These also create
nested guest VMs, and with the host switch, they are incredibly slow
and timeouts all the time. This started with the switch to the new
host, and everything was working fine on the previous host.

Given this is happening here too, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do
with these packages or their autopkgtest.

Hi Guilhem,
It shouldn't, but maybe we overlooked it. We now have this:
https://www.hetzner.com/de/dedicated-rootserver/ EX130-R

The autopkgtest logs always have the command line, you can find it on
line 3.

On IRC, bluca is also trying to help figuring out what's different. If
it would help you, we can give you access to a testbed to debug there if
that would help. (We need to be on-line, so we'd need to coordinate a
timeslot).

AFAICT that's the autopkgtest-virt-qemu command line; I was wondering
about the qemu-system arguments instead to compare with what we manually
spawn in our autopkgtests. (Not sure if autopkgtest-virt-qemu produces
different arguments depending on the platform it runs on; if not I can
also run it locally.)

Sounds good! Comparing the `--show-boot` messages, it looks like both
systemd and cryptsetup use `machine=q35` while autopkgtest-virt-qemu use
`machine=pc`. AFAIK q35 uses I/O APIC mode which is one of the reported
errors, and there might be something preventing the host from exposing
I/O APIC to the guests.

For cryptsetup at least there is no real reason to use q35 here, so it
might be worth trying with `machine=pc` to see if that makes any
difference.
