Dear Maintainer,

Vorta installed using Synaptic.

Vorta freezes when selecting an existing repository or attempting to create a
new repository.

On the Repository tab, select either "New Repository..." or "Existing
Repository..." from the + context menu. This opens either the...
"Initialize New Backup Repository" or "Connect to existing Repository" window
as expected.

Enter a password, then click the folder icon after the "Repository folder"
input box to open the folder selection window.

The folder selection window opens and allows navigation to the repository
folder. The application freeze occurs when clicking on the "Choose" button.

Thanks, Mike

It seems some other factor is involved in triggering the freeze, because
I could not reproduce the freeze reported in this bug using the
instructions you provided, I regularly use Vorta on KDE Plasma (X11) and
GNOME (Wayland), I have never experienced a regression in basic
functionality such as this bug describes, and Vorta continues to work
fine for the local-to-my-city users that I support. Are you able to
reproduce the freeze with a freshly-created user account?

What desktop environment (or window manager) are you using? What
filepicker/chooser do you see? On Plasma systems I see the Plasma
picker, and on GNOME systems I see the GNOME picker. Would you please
share if borbackup2 (ie the 2.x series vs the 1.x series) is installed?

Regards,
Nicholas

Hi Mike,

Truly, you didn't mess anything up! :) Rather, you found a bug that I
wasn't aware existed in Vorta 0.10.3. The nature of the bug appears to
be that Vorta wasn't designed to accept an empty password. Thank you
for reporting this bug and for following-up on the request for more
info.

Aha! This was what was needed to reproduce. I just confirmed that the
bug doesn't exist in 0.11.2, so now the question is if a sufficiently
small targeted fix can be made to 0.10.3-1 in trixie (13) that the
release team will unblock the bugfix (a bugfix can introduce regressions
in other areas, after all).

You're right, they are optional...strictly speaking, because some people
want unencrypted backups, passwordless systems, autologin, etc. It's a
bit tangential to this bug, but do you tend to prefer if (arguably
unsafe) user freedom or (arguably patronisingly paranoid) safe defaults
are prioritised?

I wonder why this worked?

Great to hear :)

Best,
Nicholas
