Debian packages maintain the information from

in the file debian/upstream/metadata.

In particular close to our heart is the information on
 * publications, which typically to as an itemization in "References"
 * registry entries, i.e. entries with pointers to research environment in which the software is used.

Both may indicate other software packages that may substitute or extend the functionality of the software package at hand to complete a scientific workflow.
