Hi, Could you please build the Vala bindings for libmirage ? This should be as simple as adding a Build-Depends on 'valac' and add 'usr/share/vala/vapi/*' to libmirage-dev.install (at least that's what I did locally, and it seems to do the trick) Best regards, Sébastien
Hi Sébastien, thanks for your bug report. Sorry, I'm not familiar with Vala. Why would you need Vala bindings for libmirage? Right now I'm working on a new version of the libmirage package, but I'm not sure if I'll add Vala bindings to it because I don't know how to test them properly and quickly. Best regards.
Hi Matteo, I wanted to build https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/highscore , a software written in vala that has a dependency on libmirage. Sorry, I don't have smaller/simpler usecase than Highscore for you. All I can tell you is that applying what I described in my original email did the trick. Cheers, Sébastien
Hi again Sébastien, I must confess I'm a bit skeptical of your proposal because 1. Highscore isn't packaged for Debian, 2. I wouldn't know how to test the bindings without building Highscore, 3. Highscore is still in development (see README.md). Indeed I could add the bindings the way you told me, without testing them, and call it a day. However to me that would be a lousy job. It wouldn't add much value to the package, since I find pretty normal to manually build a library needed to build a work in progress software. People interested in that should be able to sort it out by themselves, as you did. However I'm open to hear more from you regarding this issue.
Hi Matteo ! well, that's why I took a closer look to it ;-) we clearly don't have the same habit, if i need a library that is packaged in Debian I expect to enter "apt install libwhaterver-dev" in my terminal and call it a day :-) Be it for using a "stable" or "work in progress" software. In my experience, when you package a piece of software in Debian, you will inevitably have people that use a part of it you don't use yourself. That doesn't mean you have to start using that part yourself. But IMHO you shouldn't prevent them from using it (even more if they provide help/patches) Would it change anything if I spend time writing an autopkgtest that use the vala binding? Cheers, Sébastien
here you go, in attachement :-)
Sébastien Noel wrote: Well well well... that does change things a bit! To me simplicity and stability are paramount of good software design (.i.e. suckless). However it's also true that Debian is the "universal operating system", so different use cases are to be expected. Don't get me started on dropping i386 support! :'( You've just shown me that you care enough to help me understand your needs. Also you've done some actual work. Thank you! I'll happily review your patch and I'll probably include it in the next libmirage package.
We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
libmirage, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive.
A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is
attached.
Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 1128922@bugs.debian.org,
and the maintainer will reopen the bug report if appropriate.
