Hello,

the Verdana font family included in the ttf-mscorefonts-installer package is outdated.

Specifically, the installed Verdana fonts do not contain the capital sharp S character (ẞ, U+1E9E). This character is present in the current official Verdana version.

Steps to reproduce:
Install ttf-mscorefonts-installer and inspect the Verdana glyphs.

Expected result:
Verdana should include U+1E9E (capital sharp S).

Actual result:
Glyph missing.

Kind regards
Luca Rodenhäuser

This is a known issue that is unlikely to get fixed, quoting from
archwiki, "The fonts provided by these packages are out-of-date and are
missing modern hinting instructions and the full character sets". The
upstream fonts [1] have not been updated since 2003.

If you wish to get a fixed version of the verdana font, follow the
archwiki guide [2] to manually extract the newest font files from MS
Windows ISO images, the guide works for debian too. Make sure to remove
the msttcorefonts package if you manually extract the fonts from the
ISO.
