Hello. OpenSnitch in Debian is extremely out of date.  Upstream has
provided versions since 1.6.9 (which IS NOT listed in Upstream
versions).  The current version is 1.8.0, which was released upstream on
December 14, 2025.  They migrated to PyQt6 but it's still important to
keep the packages up to date.

Since this is a 'firewall' application it has security implications if
the version in use in Debian hasn't been updated since a year ago
(approximately April 2025).

as pointed out previously the Debian package is woefully out of date and is affected by numerous bugs that have been addressed in subsequent versions. Most annoying, as far as I'm concerned, opensnitch-ui hogs gigs of memory and must be restarted manually.

OTOH upstream has .deb packages which I have installed after removing Debian's outdated ones. As far as I could gather, the project maintainer was responsible for the original packaging work and so far the 1.8.0 packages from GitHub seem to be working alright.

Not sure how things got to the point they are, however with work on the package seemingly having come to a standstill for quite some time now, this ticket was worth a bump and possibly a priority increase from wishlist.

I assume the reason you do not understand how things got to this point
is that you have not had a look at the request for help for this
package, <URL: https://bugs.debian.org/1070855 >.  Upstream was
maintaining the Debian package but seem to have decided to not do so
any more.  Several people, myself inclued, have tried to pick up the
slack after this, but none so far has had the required knowledge of
both Go, Python and eBPF to be able to make a working Debian package
of newer releases.

Those that try tend to gather on the #opensnitch IRC channel on
irc.debian.org.  A new volunteer recently appeared, and I hope he will
be able to make more progress than I have. :)

in fact, my remark about "not being sure how things got to this point" was a direct reference to the developer's decision to stop contributing packages, which is the root cause and a regrettable state of affairs.

Of course, I am aware that Debian operates largely on a voluntary basis and that certain programs are way more complicated to maintain than others. However, not everyone wants or can commit the time to engaging with bug reports, especially when there are so many distros out there that don't suffer from the same problem.

Happy to hear things are moving on IRC, wish I had the time to hang out, best wishes to the new guy for a satisfactory resolution.
