Hi, libwx-perl fails to build in a test rebuild on at least amd64 and arm64 with gcc-16/g++-16, but builds properly with gcc-15/g++-15. The severity of this report will be raised before the forky release. The full build log can be found at: https://people.debian.org/~ema/gcc-16-rebuilds/output-1/libwx-perl_arm64.build.xz The last lines of the build log are at the end of this report. To build with GCC 16, either set CC=gcc-16 CXX=g++-16 explicitly, or install the gcc, g++, gfortran, ... packages from experimental. apt-get -t=experimental install g++ Common build failures include unused (but set) variables, array subscripts partly outside array bounds, and new/dropped symbols in Debian symbols files. For other C/C++ related build failures see the porting guide at http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-16/porting_to.html Please only close this issue after double-checking that the package can be built correctly with GCC 16. Please do not reassign this bug to another package. If a fix in another package is required, then file a bug for the other package (or clone), and mark this bug as blocked by the bug in the other package. This fails on sid as well now that GCC-16 is the default. It seems to be an optimization issue. It works for me on sid/amd64 with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noopt, and also with the attached targeted lower optimization level. This is at best a workaround of course. I didn't get further yet, happy if somebody else wants to pick this up.
I can confirm that the attached workaround patch solves this issue for me on amd64 as well as on s390x. I just tested this while trying to fix #1148235 and #1148236 (WebView no longer available on big endian). After applying your patch these builds on s390x without issues. I'd suggest that I team-upload libwx-perl with your GCC-16 workaround as well as a fix for #1148236 tomorrow (when the new libalien-wxwidgets-perl is available everywhere). I tried this out at https://salsa.debian.org/roland/libwx-perl (pipeline will fail until libalien-wxwidgets-perl 0.69+dfsg-9 is available). I closed the bug in changelog, but maybe we should reopen it afterwards and downgrade severity to normal to remember that we have to replace the workaround by a better solution... @Niko: Do you think that this is an acceptable way to go? Greetings Roland
Looking for a better solution I had a look at - CPAN issue tracker - Fedora patches - other distribution patches - the github fork of Wx-Perl (see #1090963) but didn't find a better solution than the workaround with the temporarily disabled optimization. I was able to reproduce the issue with the github fork, which is actively maintained, so I reported the issue there: https://github.com/sciurius/wxPerl/issues/10 I cross-checked everything in an amd64 sid chroot and the problem can be fixed by using gcc-15 (instead of gcc-16) or by applying Nikos workaround patch. Greetings Roland
Sure; thanks for looking at this! I suppose leaving the bug open would be a good way of not forgetting.
