About the archive rebuild: The build was made on virtual machines from AWS,
using sbuild and a reduced chroot with only build-essential packages.

If you cannot reproduce the bug please contact me privately, as I
am willing to provide ssh access to a virtual machine where the bug is
fully reproducible.

If this is really a bug in one of the build-depends, please use
reassign and add an affects on src:mumble, so that this is still
visible in the BTS web page for this package.

Hello Santiago.

I see the same build breakage when I go to do a build.
This appears to be a missing file in src:zeroc-ice, so I'm going to be
reassigning this bug to src:zeroc-ice.

For the next upload of mumble I'm planning to upload a version that
removes Ice support so that the build will succeed while this is being
worked on.

Thanks for reporting this bug, and for the hints of adding an "affects"
for src:mumble.

Slice checksum generation was intentionally removed in Ice 3.8. The
retained SliceChecksumDict.ice definition is marked as deprecated, and the
former C++ checksum API is no longer provided. Mumble’s dependency on that
API needs to be updated for Ice 3.8, so this is not a missing-file
packaging defect in zeroc-ice.

As documented in the upgrade guide, Ice 3.8 does not preserve source
compatibility with Ice 3.7. The necessary compatibility work is already
tracked in Mumble issue 7067 and PR 7290.

No zeroc-ice changes are required to address this checksum incompatibility.

Hi Chris,
and fixing that is beyond my capabilities.

The upstream PR 7290 is made against upstream 'master' branch (naturally), but
the changes between 'master' and 1.5.857 are HUGE.

So I tried to backport it against 1.5.x as follows:
1. Convert the Debian patches to be compatible with ``git am``
2. Backport mostly build system changes to 1.5.x
3. Add (backported) patch set of PR 7290

ad 1) When trying to adjust/backport patches, I find it useful to apply the
Debian patches to the upstream source (1.5.857 in this case) and use that to
rebase/adjust/backport other patches.
For that I do ``git am <path-to-debian-patches>`` but noticed that didn't work.
So I converted the ``.diff`` files to ``.patch`` files and fixed some (minor)
things in the process.

ad 2) To be able to apply the patches from PR 7290 onto the 1.5.x branch, I
also needed to backport changes to ``CMakeLists.txt``

ad 3) And I also needed to make changes to the patches of PR 7290 itself in
order to start the compilation.

You could just look at that last branch as 3) is build upon 2) which is build
upon 1).

The build fails with these lines:

And that's because the ``src/murmur/CMakeFiles`` directory doesn't exist.
But I don't know what I would need to do/change so that it does get created
and thus not fail at that point.

It would be most useful (for me) if upstream made a variant of PR 7290 which
targets the 1.5.x branch as they're WAY more familiar with the code and cmake
then I am.

FWIW: I think the commits from 1) would be useful in any case, but I'll leave
it up to you to use them or not.

Hopefully you or someone else can get further then I did.

I've been trying to make it compile against 1.5 at all, but there's a high
probability I'm doing it wrong and/or have 'unforseen consequences'.
And the changes/backports I've made thus far would be unsuitable for a Stable
release because they're way too invasive.
I (also) know nothing about zeroc-ice, so I have no idea how to test it to
see if it actually works properly ... if I could get it to compile.

As upstream has no intention to make a backport to 1.5 (which I can
understand), I'd say mumble 1.5 cannot have Ice integration.

Hello Diedrrik.

Thank you for your hard work here, I appreciate it. I'm quite
overwhelmed with other immediate responsibilities recently. I'm bringing
my laptop on a trip I'm about to take and I might have time to do some
work on the package, but I don't think I'll be able to do much with this
bug.

The good news is that the Mumble package can be configured not to use or
compile with Ice and I've done that, so at least the package can remain
in Debian while upstream can figure out how to deal with it.

In the past Mumble upstream has had me release a Mumble version from
Git, which is at least possible, if it comes down to that when the
Debian release approaches. Last I did this years ago it required making
a script to put together several sources and remove unreleasable files
to be able to build a releasable tarball, which then had to be released
without any cryptographic signature. Hopefully we won't have to resort
to that.

I'm also not really familiar with Zeroc-Ice and I don't use the features
it provides the Mumble package. It's used to control and automate
mumble-server operations, so it's "advanced features" mainly for sites
that operate large mumble-server installations that have a lot of users
and moderators. For those users hopefully they can hold back their
Mumble-server version to continue to use Ice until this can be fixed.
For less advanced users that only need a simple mumble-server instance
the newer versions without Ice support will still function fine.

The only other thing I can mention here is that the recent Debian GR
concerning LLM support came down to a decision that AI use is acceptable
in Debian via "responsible use", meaning any uploads done are still the
responsibility of the uploader, and AI use does not need to be
disclosed. So if you want to make progress and get to a point where all
seems lost or get stuck, it is acceptable to ask an AI (especially
locally via LM-Studio GUI or other "AI collar" to keep the AI within its
desired context) to see if a hint or a solution can be found to make
progress. It's a tool and useful for some things, but it can also
hallucinate and "pull a Star Trek and make up technobabble", so the
results need checking if it seems to work. But "when all else fails"
it's worth a shot.
