Dear Maintainer,

Following latest update, my previously installed printed required to downlad the plugin but it failed.

I then removed completely the printer and tried to install again but downloding the plugin fails.

I tried with sudo hplip -u, sudo hplip -i sudo hp-plugin they all fail.

Here's the error with hp-plugin

It probably does not help much, but trying to download hplip plugin outside a
browser, e.g. with wget, leads to a 403 error.
Adding a user agent to wget like so, makes the download complete successfully

$ wget --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML,
like Gecko) Chrome/149.0.0.0 Safari/537.36"
https://developers.hp.com/sites/default/files/2026-05/hplip-3.26.4-plugin.run

The same applies for the .run.asc file which is needed for verification, but I
have no idea how to verify the download, so please let hplip install it without
verification.

I can confirm that this is still reproducible with hplip 3.26.4+dfsg0-2,
but the failure mode is clearer now.

The plugin metadata currently points to:

http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/hplip-3.26.4-plugin.run

The downloaded file has the checksum listed in plugin.conf:

  199f78f8af7f36894d7180e9090963ce2550a75ec701f8a4ba37665a9746fdf0

So the file is not corrupted. The verification failure happens because the
current plugin is signed with HP's newer RSA key:

  primary fingerprint: 82FF A7C6 AA74 11D9 34BD E173 AC69 536A 2CF3 A243
  signing subkey:      1E3D 9B4E 4447 5F51 EC08 45AB 5E4E 4D24 A34E CD57

The hplip package still ships/imports the older HPLIP DSA key:

  4ABA 2F66 DBD5 A958 9491 0E06 73D7 70CD A590 47B9

After importing the newer HP public key into HPLIP's GPG homedir, verification
succeeds:

  gpg: Good signature from "HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) <hplip@hp.com>"

In my case I had to import the key into both:

  /home/michele/.hplip/.gnupg
  /root/.hplip/.gnupg

because running hp-plugin with sudo uses root's HPLIP keyring.

The plugin then installed successfully. The final state is:

  [plugin]
  installed = 1
  eula = 1
  version = 3.26.4

Installed package versions:

  hplip                  3.26.4+dfsg0-2
  hplip-data             3.26.4+dfsg0-2
  hplip-gui              3.26.4+dfsg0-2
  printer-driver-hpcups  3.26.4+dfsg0-2

There is a second issue with the fallback URL used by hplip:

https://developers.hp.com/sites/default/files/hplip-3.26.4-plugin.run

That URL returns 403 Forbidden here. The current HP-hosted path appears to use
the 2026-05 directory, as noted in the previous follow-up.

So I think the Debian-side fix is at least to update the HPLIP public signing
key shipped/imported by the package. It may also be worth checking whether the
fallback URL construction needs to handle HP's dated plugin paths.

Hi, thanks for the info.

It is not only about plugins but also about upgrades,

hplip.v2$ uscan --download-current-version
Newest version of hplip on remote site is 3.26.4, specified download version is 3.26.4
gpgv: Signature made Wed May 20 07:22:15 2026 CEST
gpgv:                using RSA key 5E4E4D24A34ECD57
gpgv: Can't check signature: No public key
uscan die: OpenPGP signature did not verify. at /usr/share/perl5/Devscripts/Uscan/Output.pm line 83.

hplip.v2$ uscan --download-version 3.22.10
Newest version of hplip on remote site is 3.22.10, specified download version is 3.22.10
gpgv: Signature made Thu Oct 27 15:17:27 2022 CEST
gpgv:                using DSA key 4ABA2F66DBD5A95894910E0673D770CDA59047B9
gpgv: Good signature from "HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) <hplip@hp.com>"

So, Thorsten, seems that it is really needed to upgrade hplip gpg key
under debian/upstream/signing-key.asc (it is installed in the package
and apparently used to verify plugins).

While we are at this you may want to upgrade debian/watch to v5, see
attached watch file for a proposal.

Hope this helps,

Hello Developers,

I am reporting a bug when installing the HPLIP plugin for version
3.26.4. The plugin download completes, but the installer fails during
digital signature verification, so the plugin cannot be installed.

System / environment:
- OS: Linux Debian (sid)
- Printer: HP LaserJet Professional P1606dn
- HPLIP version: 3.26.4
- Command used:
   ```
   hp-plugin
   ```

Steps to reproduce:
1. Run `hp-plugin` on Debian (sid).
2. When prompted with:
    “Enter option (d=download*, p=specify path, q=quit) ? d”
    choose `d` (Download plugin from HP).
3. Let the installer download the plugin.
4. The installation fails during the “Importing digital key” step.

Actual error message (verbatim):
```
error: Digital signature verification failed for the file
/home/username/.hplip/hplip-3.26.4-plugin.run. File may have been
corrupted or altered
```

Affected file:
- /home/username/.hplip/hplip-3.26.4-plugin.run

Expected result:
- The installer should verify the digital signature and complete the
plugin installation successfully.

Impact:
- I cannot complete the plugin installation needed for HPLIP 3.26.4 to
work properly with the printer.

Thank you.

Hello Augustin,
it seems like there is no action on this bug report, unfortunately.

Am Mon, Jul 20, 2026 at 06:44:18PM +0200 schrieb Agustin Martin:

So I followed the instructions in #1137654. For the record, the public
key for verification can be found here:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/hplipDigitalCertificate.html

To install the plugin, I did *not* call hp-plugin. As already
discovered in #1137654 this fails.

Instead I obtained "hplip-3.26.4-plugin.run". As I was able to verify
the authenticity with the key obtained above, I executed it (as
non-root!) and it installed the plugin without problem.

And now scanning works again!

I CC'ed 1137654, as this might make printer installation possible as
well.

That would be perfect! Using #1137654 with my instructions above
hopefully make this possible.

Greetings

         Helge
