Dear Maintainer,

I am running the Arduino IDE with two peculiarities that might be involved
in this bug, namely:

1- Running under the Sway compositor, using Wayland.
2- Running in an ARM64 laptop

What am I reporting?

1- When I run “arduino”, I get a blank window titled “Arduino Permission
    Checker”. It remains blank. Pressing Enter makes it go away.

2- The splash screen appears for a second or two, and then the IDE is
    visible — but remains fixed at 490×570. If I set the window as floating,
    it adjusts to the right size, but if I have it as a tiled window, it
    looks as a silly little square in the upper left corner. My laptop's
    display is 1920×1200, and my external monitor is 3840×2160, so... it is
    very uncomfortable.

I have tried changing the editor font, and it adjusts the text size, but
the window dimensions stay the same. I also tried changing the interface
scale, but the effect is the same: Larger (or smaller) UI on a very tight
viewport.

I found that following the notes presented in
/usr/share/doc/arduino/README.Debian for non-reparenting window manager
users (i.e. “export _JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING=true”) make the behavior I
mentioned disappear.

I would just ask, then, to make it a bit cleearer in the README: it
mentions that non-reparenting window manages “will only display empty gray
windows”; it does not match my experience (I got a non-resizing small text
window instead of using the full available space). But I think that just
adding this note would be enough to considering this bug dealt with.

Hi,

yes, that ENV variable is expected to be set when running any JAVA
application under sway. AFAIK recent JDKs have native wayland support,
but I am not sure how far.

This is rather a wayland issue than a arduino-ide specific issue,
nevertheless we can improve that.
