Please remove rng-tools5 in favor of rng-tools (currently in
experimental until this is sorted out).

for that, something like:

Package: rng-tools5
Depends: rng-tools (>= 6)
Description: Transitional package

Package: rng-tools
Breaks: rng-tools5 (<< 6)
Replaces: rng-tools5 (<< 6)


This would give users of rng-tools5 in trixie an automatic upgrade
to rng-tools.

Yes, I agree. But introducing the transitional package uncoordinated
with the rng-tools5 maintainer would be a hijack. Michael, do you have
an opinion on the proposal?

Hi Michael,

there seems to be no progress on this and I would like to get this
solved for forky.

Therefore, if there's nothing happening until end of September, I'll
reassign this bug to src:ftp.debiann.org in order to get the removal
processed, and I'll add a transitional package bin:rng-tools5 to
src:rng-tools.
