It appears that the maxima `load` command needs gcc to compile maxima
libraries/packages. However the Debian package maxima does not depend
on gcc so that on a bootstrap like environments (as the ones used by
autopkgtest) or on non-programmer user like environments maxima cannot
load libraries/packages (unless gcc is actually installed), hence the
report. This issue may confuse maxima newbies.

I am a user of maxima and wxmaxima, and I would like these software
programs to continue running on new, clean, default debian installs.
So I am trying to figure out a way to deal with debains policy of not
installing gcc.

Draw() seems like a core routine to me, not an optional package like ctensor.

So do we already have or can we add a way to maxima's build system to
1) run gcl to create the c code for draw
2) compile and link this c code with gcc into the core or a shared library.

We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
maxima, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive.
