This system is a Devuan LXQt install obtained by cloning an
existing Devuan XFCE install to a separate partition (via rsync),
then purging xfce4 and installing task-lxqt-desktop in a chroot.
pavucontrol (GTK) was already present on the system, inherited from
the original XFCE install, which is almost certainly why apt never
pulled pavucontrol-qt in via the Recommends line above. This is an
unusual ("on the edge") installation method, not a fresh live
install, and I cannot rule out that some other pre-existing leftover
package/config contributed to the issue. That said, the Recommends
alternative itself seems like a genuine packaging inconsistency
regardless of install method, since a fresh system where pavucontrol
(GTK) got pulled in first by some other dependency chain would
hit the same problem.

Simple Workaround: to start pavucontrol "by hand" through terminal

You have both gtk and qt versions installed.

I  cannot reproduce this in my setup. However I got some warming from
X11, maybe that's related in your setup?

It works in paralle for me. Both connect and talk with pauseauide
daemon when launchs.

I cannot reproduce it in my clean environment. Can you reproduce it
with documented steps in a clean envirnoment?

No. Just after cloning the Devuan/xfce session to get  a Devuan/lxqt,
only pavucontrol was installed, inherited from Devuan/Xfce.
It did not work, meaning the little popup window shown by the little
loudspeaker in the cable tray did not provide any action to open, for
instance, the audio-mixer to set up teh volume.
but it was possible (as a workaround I mentioned) to launch it by
terminal to set the sound volume as desired.
nowadays, pavucontrol is not installed any longer, only pavucontrol-qt is.
To solve this issue, and during a short while both pavucontrol and
pavacontrol-qt were installed till I decided for clean-up reason, to
remove it from the installed packages.
Sorry, I did not care about any X11 error messages
As far as I can tell today, the issue is only there when pavacontrol
ONLY is installed in a Devan/Debian Lxqt environment.
No I cannot. I do not want to jeopardize the proper operation of the
Devuan/LxQt system, now.
