Dear Maintainer,

For some time now, I've noticed that flameshot doesn't do anything
when started from the tray icon (I don't know whether PrintScreen
works, because my Bluetooth keyboard doesn't have a PrntScn key).

When I press the icon, nothing happens: I can't select a rectangle
(trying to select with the mouse just selects text from current
windows), and around 30 seconds later, I get two messages: one saying
"Screenshot portal timed out after 30 seconds", and one saying "Unable
to capture screen".

I'm running Debian Forky under X11, with XFCE desktop. I've tried
re-installing flameshot, with no improvement.

I am aware of bugs #910970 and #1051179, but they only seem to affect
Wayland installations.

flameshot has switched to xdg-desktop-portal as a means of grabbing
screenshots, which means you'll need to install a portal that works with
your desktop environment/window manager.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's any valid screenshot portal backend
for XFCE/X11 any longer (xdg-desktop-portal-gnome now relies on
gnome-shell's dbus interface, and xdg-dedsktop-portal-gtk has no
screenshot portal backend).

So for now, you can enable the "Use legacy X11 screenshot method
(deprecated)" option in `flameshot config`, which will let flameashot
bypass the portals implementation and just grab it using the X11 API
directly. Note that it's near the bottom of the checkboxes in the
`General` section, so you'll need to scroll down.

This is a deprecated setting, so while the option currently exists in
flameshot v14, there's no guarantee that it will continue to exist
moving forward. The rest of the world is moving away from X11 and has
been moving for a long time now, which means that more and more things
are going to stop being able to grab screenshots on X11 unless someone
builds an `org.freedesktop.impl.portal.Screenshot` implementation that
supports grabbing screenshots from X11.

I was mistaken about the lack of a working screneshot portal for XFCE.
Looks like `xdg-desktop-portal-xapp` supports using
`xfce4-screenshooter` as a backend[1], so you can try installing both
packages and seeing if that works.
