There are a lot of fonts with reserved name in main, so this should not
be an issue (you can build from source but ship the built ttf).

For the hinting extraction vfblib can be used whch is currently in NEW.
When it enters unstable, please move this to main. I have tried building
some of the vfb sources successfully via:
vfb3ufo name.vfb
fontmake -u name.ufo -o ttf --overlaps-backend pathops
