Dear Maintainer,

after upgrading Thunderbird from 1:140.13.0esr-2~deb13u1 to
1:140.14.0esr-1~deb13u1, Thunderbird crashes reproducibly when
performing drag-and-drop operations across application/window
boundaries.

The problem occurs, for example, in both of the following cases:

1. Dragging an e-mail message from Thunderbird to another application
   (Firefox in my test case).

2. Dragging an attachment from an e-mail in Thunderbird to the file
   manager.

Thunderbird crashes as soon as the drag-and-drop operation is
performed. The issue is reproducible in an XFCE desktop session
running via XRDP using X11.

Terminal output at the time of the crash includes:

[GFX1-]: RenderCompositorSWGL failed mapping default framebuffer, no dt
ExceptionHandler::GenerateDump minidump generation succeeded
Exiting due to channel error.

In one test the following additional graphics error was reported:

Crash Annotation GraphicsCriticalError: |[C0][GFX1-]:
CompositorBridgeChild receives IPC close with reason=AbnormalShutdown

I performed the following tests with 1:140.14.0esr-1~deb13u1:

* Normal mode: reproducible crash.
* --safe-mode: reproducible crash.
* MOZ_WEBRENDER=0: reproducible crash.
* MOZ_DISABLE_RDD_SANDBOX=1 MOZ_WEBRENDER=0: reproducible crash.
* XFWM compositing disabled: reproducible crash.

Most importantly, I then downgraded only Thunderbird to:

1:140.13.0esr-2~deb13u1

using the previous Debian package from my local APT cache.

With Thunderbird 140.13.0esr, the same drag-and-drop operations work
normally and reproducibly without any crash.

The upgrade from 140.13.0esr to 140.14.0esr therefore appears to
introduce a regression affecting drag-and-drop in this X11/XFCE/XRDP
environment.

Environment:

* Debian 13 (trixie)
* XFCE
* X11
* XRDP remote desktop session
* amd64
* Thunderbird installed from the official Debian package
* affected version: 1:140.14.0esr-1~deb13u1
* last known working version: 1:140.13.0esr-2~deb13u1

Thunderbird generated a minidump for every reproduced crash. I can
provide the corresponding .dmp and .extra files if useful.

For the time being I have downgraded Thunderbird to 140.13.0esr and
placed the package on hold, as this restores working drag-and-drop.

Please let me know if additional diagnostics, crash dumps, or tests
are required.

Kind regards,
Lorenz

Hi,

We’re having the same problem with MATE Desktop / X11 since the last update.

Regards.
