   * What led up to the situation?
gkrellm is running on my system. The UI sometimes will stop showing the VPN interface (tun1)

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?
if I disconnect from the VPN then reconnect, the tun1 interface will show up again
