Dear Maintainer,

 What led up to the situation? Installed nvidia-kernel-dkms

 What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)? Installed the package and rebooted to get the new kernel, this resulted in loss of GUI login

 What was the outcome of this action? Lost GUI interface

 What outcome did you expect instead? To have GUI interface with the Nvidia drivers If it matters, I have a GP104 [GeForce GTX1080] for a GPU

I noticed in the email I received after filing the bug, that it
recommends installing  nvidia-driver  610.57.04-1.
So I tried to install that version and apt told me that I already had
that version installed.
Is it possible the driver is not being recognized for some reason and
that is the actual issue?

This is not a package that is available from Debian. The newest Nvidia
proprietary driver packaged in Debian non-free is 550 (or 555 in
experimental but I wouldn't recommend that), which is already known to
be out of date (https://bugs.debian.org/1081302, etc.).

If you obtained the 610.57.04 driver directly from Nvidia, perhaps from
<https://docs.nvidia.com/datacenter/tesla/driver-installation-guide/debian.html>,
please contact their support channels rather than Debian's. Debian does
not have any control over the driver provided by Nvidia.

So I ensured the version isn't present on my system by running 'apt
remove --purge *nvidia*' and rebooted. I then tried to install the
nvidia-kernel-dkms package and it made my display go to 1024x728
resolution and only display on one of the two monitors I use (it did
install the 550 drivers). So after removing that hot mess, I'm back on
the Navoo (yes I know I misspelled it) drivers.
Hopefully the correct drivers will be available for my Geforce GTX 1080
GPU fairly soon, it's not like I can afford to go back to AMD
unfortunately.
