#1147946 fonts-lexi-gulim: No source available for the packaged version

The package does not come with source and the referenced upstream only
publishes vfb source files for older versions.

Please downgrade to an older version and build from source. This cannot
be healed by just including the older source or moving to contrib
because Debian as distributor of this GPL-2 licensed material has to be
able to provide the source.

As GPL-2 said:

So as a TTF file is modifiable by humans, it's not considered as a
lack of source
code. This practice has been applied for a long time about font licenses.

No, the TTF file is not the preferred form for modification in this
case. This is demonstrated by upstream publishing vfb files.

It is furthermore the case because the font contains Visual True Type
hinting information, which is sourceful in vfb but is compiled to
bytecode in the TTF.

So I am reopening this bug. Please do not just close bugs that you have
not handled.

I volunteer to make the change but I expect that you would revert the
change (as you are about to do for other fonts). So I want to be sure
that I am not wasting my time.

Existence of upstream VFB alone doesn't mean a lack of source. A TTF
can be a source even when it is built from other files.

OK, so it makes the TTF non-source. This information was needed when
you submitted the bug.

I know a guy who edited hinting bytecode assembly in fontforge
manually in the TTF file he released, but that was an exceptional
case.

I have handled it by explaining. Bugs can be closed if they are
believed to be not actual problems. Well, Debian BTS doesn't have
clear documentation about not-a-bug cases. But it doesn't mean such
bugs should be kept open forever.

Lexi fonts are not worth the effort nowadays. popcon count is zero.

So practically, I'm going to request removal instead.

I just wanted to add my voice to the fact that Bastian is correct in this
case. The binary TTF file is not the source.

Because Bastian has already volunteered to do the work, I think it would be
inappropriate of you to request removal. You can always just orphan the
package if you are no longer interested in maintaining it.

This font is team maintained. I've been the one who created and
maintained this and other Korean font packages most of the time. From
time to time, there are ppl who want to change the fonts and
team-upload and that was great. But sometimes, it has always been my
burden when things broke, as I'm the only Korean speaker around here.
I prefer removal of this package rather than adding some burden on
Debian members, not for a purpose to give up my maintenance but as a
part of my maintenance.

Seriously, there's zero benefit for users by whatever changes in the
Lexi fonts. These font families were designed for Korean body text,
they were somewhat useful 10+ years ago but in 2020s nobody uses this
font. The upstream company closed long ago. People will just choose
alternatives with similar shapes, better quality and better licenses
than the vanilla GPL with no embedding exception.
