Some further relevant information:

* It correctly burns CDs if I boot the Lubuntu 22.04 iso and install brasero.  It fails with later versions of Lubuntu and with Debian Live Gnome stable.
* I am using a USB DVD writer (“LG Slim Portable DVD Writer”).
