Hello release team,
for a long time, binNMUs of Multi-Arch: same packages used to be broken.
sbuild would create a binNMU changelog entry from the time of the build.
dpkg-buildpackage would then seed SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH from that varying
changelog entry. Other tools would pick up the value and embed it into
shared files such as manual pages. This tends to result in latent
coinstallation failures. The package is ok on initial upload and broken
once binNMUed.
We have fixed this in sbuild by changing its default behavior and it now
computes the binNMU timestamp deterministically. The buildd admins were
kind enough to deploy the updated version of sbuild (see #1146425), so
our buildds are now fixed but many packages in unstable and forky are
still affected.
There are about 100 binary packages built from 60 source packages
affected. I am including a listing at the end of this mail.
I suggest that you binNMU a sample (5 to 10) of them, then have me
confirm that the binNMU did resolve the problem as expected and then
schedule the rest. Choosing smaller packages for the trial would be
sensible just let me know which. Note that these packages may have other
M-A:same problems. I do not expect to fix all of them with binNMUs. Do
you agree with the approach? How about selecting perl libraries as those
tend to be faster to build and the affected files tend to be manual
pages.
